The Lamar Lifesaver Award is an initiative to recognize those who perform heroic deeds for others, even when they place themselves at risk. The award is presented during a ceremony at the Lamar County Sheriff's Office at six month intervals. The names of the recipients are permanently displayed on a plaque at the Sheriff’s Office.
The first award recipient, Christina Marie Bennett, was honored on August 17, 2012 at a ceremony held at the Lamar County Sheriff's Office. On June 17th, 2012 Ms. Bennett assisted Steve Caslin in escaping his smoldering vehicle after a crash on Yatesville Road. Mr. Caslin was badly injured and disoriented from the crash and was not able to exit the vehicle on his own. The courageous assistance provided by Ms. Bennett rescued Mr. Caslin from the vehicle just minutes before the vehicle burst into flames saving his life.
